Despacito was first released by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi in 2017 and became the top-streamed track within 6 months. It was a mixture of reggaeton, pop and rock has not just brought interest in reggaeton but also brought attention towards Latin music in general. In 2015, there were two mostly Spanish-language songs on Billboard's Top 100 and in 2016 there were four. In the height of Despacito's success in 2017, 19 songs mainly in Spanish reached at the very top of 100. The number grew to 41 by 2020. Justin Bieber remixed Despacito 2017 with a version in two languages. Soon, other artists collaborated with reggaeton superstars like Drake and Bad Bunny with MIA (2018), Madonna and Maluma and Medellin 2019 In the year 2020, a handful of reggaeton artists were expressing displeasure at their genre's shift towards the mainstream but a new generation of performers, including Rauw Alejandro, aimed to keep reggaeton evolving. He often used electronic dance as well as different types.
